Yusuf – Tajikistan

The name of the child in this story has been changed to protect confidentiality.

Yusuf was first diagnosed with TB disease in June 2011. Eight months later, his diagnosis was changed to drug-resistant TB because his doctors learned that a close family member had been sick with drug-resistant TB the previous year. Yusuf was started on treatment with second-line drugs, and he has experienced many side effects which make it difficult for him to continue with the treatment. But his condition has been improving. Yusuf’s doctors stress that more research is needed that can help improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of TB so that children like Yusuf will not have to suffer from this grueling disease.
